This book is about the company town of Westwood, California, founded by the Red River Lumber Company as the locale of its California operations. The social and economic institutions are studied along with the ethnic diversity and labor relations. The town of Westwood is compared with and contrasted against McCloud and Weed, which were also company towns in the lumber industry of northeastern California and were founded in the same time period as Westwood.
